A SUPERNATURAL thriller for teenage readers by popular author Celine Kiernan has won the 22nd Children's Books Ireland (CBI) Book of the Year Award.
The book, 'Into The Grey', is set in Dublin in the 1970s and tells the story of identical teenage twins Patrick and Dom who are forced to move house after their senile grandmother starts a fire that destroys their family home.
The family moves to a temporary house, where strange things start to happen. A series of frightening night-time events follow, as the spirits of previous occupants of the house struggle to come to terms with their own history and begin to take control of Dom's body.
Dubliner Celine Kiernan, who now lives in Cavan, is already well known for her scary stories. Her 'Moorehawke Trilogy', set in an alternate Renaissance Europe, was an international bestseller.
Although more modern, 'Into The Grey' is in the same genre of fantasy novels for young adults.
Ms Kiernan's book is the first to win both Book of The Year and Children's Choice Award at the annual event. Eight junior juries from school and library reading groups around Ireland chose her book as the Children's Choice winner. At the ceremony yesterday, Ms Kiernan was presented with a trophy and a cheque for €5,000.
The Eilis Dillon award of 1,000 for a first time author or illustrator went to Paula Leyden for 'A Butterfly Heart'.
